Let us talk about laundry, we all have to do it whether we like it or not. We are a family of five, and let me tell you, dirty laundry piles up constantly. My washing machine is working almost daily, cleaning clothes, towels, bed sheets and so much more. Considering that this is a part of my daily life, I have researched some natural ingredients to keep up with our laundry naturally.

Many of the commercial detergents, softeners, stain removers, and dryer sheets that are sold on the market today contain harsh chemicals. Not only are they hazardous to your health, but they are also toxic to our environment. I am always on the quest looking for ways to live my life as toxin free as possible. I have found ways to clean our clothes without causing too much harm to my family and our environment.
In this article, I will teach you three ways how to wash your clothes naturally.
White Vinegar

I love vinegar and it has so many uses! I like to store it in pretty glass containers that can be found at any dollar store.
Plain white vinegar is wonderful for laundry and helps whiten whites. It brightens and softens, and neutralizes odours. Simply add two cups of vinegar if you are doing a normal wash cycle. You can use half a cup if you are doing a rinse cycle. I also like to purchase glass containers from the dollar store to put the vinegar in. To simplify my life, I keep my containers close to the washing machine for easy access.
Soap Nuts

I have recently discovered soap nuts and they are wonderful! The soap nut grows on trees, and they contain saponin. In my opinion, it is a great laundry detergent, and it can be used for washing clothes alone. The soap nut will clean and soften your clothes. It’s very easy to use and economical as well. If you have sensitive skin like us, the soap nut is a great alternative to using commercial laundry soap. I found my soap nuts at the local Bulk Barn.
You will need:
- Laundry mesh bags to put your soap nuts in. You can purchase your laundry mesh bags at any dollar store.
- Soap nuts.
Directions:
- Simply put soap nuts in a mesh bag and throw them in the washing machine.
How do I know when it is time to change my soap nuts for new ones? They will look and feel soft, and their scent will be faded.
Homemade Laundry Soap

This is a recipe that I have been making for several years. It is easy to make and keeps your clothes fresh and clean.
You will need:
-One Bar Shaved Soap. I use Fels Naptha. You can use a cheese grater to do this. This soap can be ordered on Amazon.
-One cup of Borax. This product can be ordered on Amazon.
–One cup of Arm and Hammer Washing Soda. Do not confuse this with baking soda! It is not the same. This product can be ordered on Amazon.
Directions:
-I mix it all together and store it in a glass container. You can also store it in recycled laundry soap containers.
It is so easy to live toxin free, and it does not have to cost a lot of money.
Do you have any tips or laundry soap recipes that you would like to share with my readers?
I use soap nut for laundry too and my mum makes shampoo out of it. It’s such a great replacement.

My mum usually lets them sit in water for a few hours. After that boil it in the same water for 10/15 mins. Let it cool and then squeeze the soap nuts till all the liquid comes out. And you can then use that water as shampoo. Be careful it doesn’t go in your eyes though because it really stings.

You’re welcome. Hope it works. Also don’t make too much because it goes bad after one or two weeks.
